Foursquare Ditches Google Maps For OpenStreetMaps →
parislemon:
This is interesting because maps are obviously a vital part of location-based services. And while a few have picked Bing Maps over Google Maps, I can’t recall any service as big as Foursquare, which was using Google for so long, ditching them in favor of the open alternative (as they note, several smaller startups have, often due to cost — which was also why Foursquare started...

New Apple TVs Alongside New iPads? →
Now this could be interesting…
parislemon:
Mark Gurman of 9to5Mac cites “reliable sources” and has some part numbers to back it up.
I don’t have any information about this, but it sounds right because I’d imagine Apple will want higher quality video content to show off on the new iPad’s Retina screen. That likely means upgrading current HD iTunes content from 720p to 1080p (which is...

Windows Phone 7 Apps →
A great read, especially from the outside-looking-in perspective on WP7.
The thing I love most when looking through those apps is the consistency, yet each of the apps retains some form of unique identity. With iOS apps, it seems that each app has a very distinct identity, but the consistency is hit or miss.
Each of those apps looks like to does a great job of leveraging the most powerful...

Eventually you start to think that AT&T executives should just stop thinking...
– Karl Bode from the previously-linked piece about AT&T’s latest idiotic money-making scheme. (via parislemon)
I really can’t see how AT&T is having trouble making money, nor can I see how they would be in trouble if they were turned into a “dumb pipe”. Its an eventually...

Hitchhiker's Guide to Git →
A great lead-in for new Git users. A lot of tutorials focus on using git from the perspective of the tool, but not a lot focus on how to structure your development environment using Git. Everyone and/or every group has a different approach, but its nice to have a proven basis for developing your own workflow when you’re just starting to get going.

Ubuntu for Android →
Is it bad that the idea of a pure Ubuntu-based phone (cutting out the Google and Android portions) is intriguing at this point? Or an Ubuntu-based tablet? The docking thing I’m not keen on, but I won’t deny its novelty and appeal.

It's Unnatural →
parislemon:
Sarah Lacy talking about Google+ on PandoDaily:
We simply don’t need another social network, no matter how great your circles are or how badly Larry Page wants to have one.
Agreed. The problem, which Google really, truly does not seem to understand is that at the end of the day, they’re solving a problem which has already been solved. They may think it hasn’t, but it has.
It’s...

Suicide by stupid: The Oatmeal hammers the video... →
Sad [and humorous] though this is, I don’t find this hyperbolic at all.
Its one more example of how the movie / television industry is killing itself.
How much longer will these retarded ass-monkies be able to run their ship into the ground before they run out of money to fuel it?
oatmeal:
I tried to watch Game of Thrones and this is what happened.

Pain Without Gain - Krugman (again) →
Now the results are in — and they’re exactly what three generations’ worth of economic analysis and all the lessons of history should have told you would happen. The confidence fairy has failed to show up: none of the countries slashing spending have seen the predicted private-sector surge. Instead, the depressing effects of fiscal austerity have been reinforced by falling private spending.

Home Libraries... →
My wife and I dream of building a house that includes a den/library lined with bookshelves one day. Seeing this kind of stuff only reconfirms that.
Also, the giant shelving unit in my garage loaded down with boxes upon boxes of books we no longer have shelf room for :-\

And I'm done following Welch...
I had to give up AngryMacBastards because the ranting was funny at first, but just got sad and annoying, and now this is the last straw in following his screeds.
Matt makes the point, not a new one mind you, that piracy is the fault of the content producers, plain and simple, albeit in a colorful way even John can appreciate.
There is a plethora of reasons Matt is right. Whether you agree...

New Logo for Windows 8 →
Simple, effective.
Sad though it is, the best looking one (in my opinion) is still the Windows 1.0 logo.
Also, I agree with MG, why don’t they just jump off the fucking boat and ditch the Windows name? Seriously. With all the baggage that brand brings with it, are they really money ahead by sticking with it? Microsoft is the brand they should be worried about, Windows is merely a...

Wow. I didn’t see that one coming.
Suffice it to say I’m excited with just about every aspect of this announcement. Apple’s move to annual release cycles for OS X, more iCloud integration, Notification Center, and Gatekeeper are all welcome additions.

Reactionaries...
So CNN just reported that President Obama’s approval is back up to 50%, largely based around the perceived performance of the economy.
Last month, the country was going to hell in a handcart, but this month? Meh, things are lookin’ alright.
Q: What really changed for the average American in the last month?
A: Not a damned thing, or at most, very damned little.
But because...

Gruber on Isaacson →
Everybody asks what I thought of Steve Jobs’ biography, and my answer is usually not what they expected. I disliked it, but couldn’t really explain why, except to say that it didn’t seem to accurately convey anything more than that Jobs was an asshole, and we all knew that already. Gruber has shed more light and actually identified a few of the shortcomings; there are many more,...

The Elevation Dock About To Set Kickstarter... →
I love the success Elevation is seeing here, and I hope it continues.
parislemon:
As Trevor Gilbert notes on PandoDaily, the “best dock for the iPhone” project has now surpassed $900,000 in backing and is closing in on LunaTik’s (you know, the awesome iPod nano watch) record of $942,578 with 3 days to go.
If you want to know how much thought and care was put into the Elevation Dock, just...

wilwheaton:
At a private three-day retreat in California last weekend, conservative billionaires Charles and David Koch and about 250 to 300 other individuals pledged approximately $100 million to defeat President Obama in the 2012 elections.

HiDPI...
Ars & Co seems to be convinced that HiDPI elements means HiDPI Macbooks
Here’s my challenge: Plug your Macbook Air into a Cinema display or some other hi-resolution external and see how much faster your battery drains.

Honeywell sues over Nest Thermostat... →
Another great example of how broken patents are in the US. Honeywell owns these patents, but how many of their thermostats actually use them? They don’t want to actually evolve. They’ve had two decades to be working on products that could have been the Nest. Instead, they just want to keep the industry at a level of shit that suits their profit margins.
As Gruber asks, how do you...

Panasonic Comes In At Negative $10 Billion →
(Yay for Tumblr losing my commentary on the first attempt)
Lets not forget, it was a pretty shitty year for Japan all around, so how much did that impact these numbers?

Fear...and dentists
I had my share of phobias as a kid (more than my share, I’m sure some professionals would claim). Most of them I got over as I grew up, but fear of the dentist has hung in there. Weak teeth run in my family, so I spent an inordinate amount of time getting fillings as a kid. A few dentists I’ve been to as an adult have commented that many of my molars should have been crowned long ago....
