Had President Obama not signed this bill into law, regardless of his reasons, he would still be catching nine kinds of hell because of the ripple effect it would have had on the military, the country, and not just our economy but the world economy. The Republican-Controlled Congress WROTE this bill. And after President Obama signed it he made it a point to say that he had serious reservations about the provisions it enacts, highlighting the ability of the military (under his command) to detain US citizens.
The Republicans knew this would get him into hot water. They also knew the bill had to pass in order for the military to keep functioning at all. And they knew that President Obama knew that. But do those facts stop the libertarians and conservatives from prattling on about how “Obama signed this bill”? Notice they never say that he drafted the bill. Or what provisions specifically he asked for versus the ones he openly displayed contempt for. Nope. All they need is the soundbite, because that’s all most of the muppets out there among their parties care about. And they’ll happily parrot those sound bites to anybody who listens, somehow subverting even intelligent minds to the idea that Obama is some kind of draconian leader, because he was powerless to accept certain provisions of a bill but veto others, thanks to the a rather gaping flaw in the Veto process and the unscrupulous acts of a conservative majority.
