Please Mr. Romney…tell us more.
There are 1.4 million people on active duty in the military.
The DoD is the largest employer in the United States.
We spend roughly $700B (that’s a B as in billion folks) per year on national defense, a good chunk of which goes to contractors who employ untold numbers of engineers, as well as skilled and unskilled laborers.
How many fewer public school teachers would there be if all Federal funding for public schools ceased overnight?
Lets not forget that the business side of managing 330,000,000 prosperous Americans’ interests, be it agriculture and food safety, education, taxes, commerce, justice, transportation, or any of the thousands of other things the federal government is responsible for, involves a metric shitload of man hours. A lot of work is farmed out to more private industry consultants and contractors, just like the department of defense. And a lot of private interests benefit from the mere presence of a government entity (think of the towns that grow up around a military base). Our area is seeing similar, albeit smaller scale benefits from the Muscatatuck Urban Training Center. Then again the only reason our map dot has prospered at all is because it lies at the intersection of a major interstate corridor and a major US Highway. This would be a good time to remind everyone that the Interstate system remains the largest public works project in the world, and last time I checked, the single most expensive things we have built.
So please, you plastic smile windbag, shout on about how the federal government doesn’t create jobs. Given the policies of the past 12 years, neither do your greedy ass benefactors.
