Microsoft’s first new logo since 1987. Janet I. Tu:

For the first time, the company’s logo will also include a symbol: In this case, a square formed by four multicolored square tiles — reminiscent of the company’s multihued Windows logo in years past. (Ironically, Windows 8’s new logo is now single-colored.)

Well, I guess Windows isn’t going away anytime soon. Overall, much better.

The logo strikes me as a distinct nod towards Metro.

Given how little attention I pay to the Windows ecosphere any more, this was a surprise. I really dig the look and feel of Metro, despite having never used it in practice before. If more developers embrace this paradigm, Windows might actually start sucking less, at least from a visual, user experience standpoint.

Windows 8…

Finally got my Windows 8 box up. The only thought I’ll add to the noise is this:

Metro on a phone. Metro on a gaming console. Metro on a PC. I like where this is going.

Then I have to install VMWare Tools, or visit the control panel, and I’m greeted by Old & Ugly. Why is the “polished glass” look still in vogue?

There’s a lot of polish already applied, and a few details that bug me, but overall its going to be an interesting year. I really hope developers run with the Metro concept.

Microsoft: you have all the pieces in place for your own radical shake up, and you have a potentially killer platform here. Don’t fuck this up.
